The group, ‘Hear God Calling’, came at a pivotal time for both my professional and personal life. During my career, I have worked in Corporate America, and it was easy for me to get caught up in the daily work demands; while losing sight of my life’s true calling and purpose. I discovered this group in one of the hundreds of daily emails I usually quickly glance at and delete. However, the topic of this group, ‘Hear God Calling’ was exactly what I had been praying for as I was at a crossroads in my life, ‘Do I continue to work in Corporate America and chase the big paychecks and fancy titles; or, do I submit myself to God’s will for my life’?
A Gifted Leader
Our teacher, Dave Sparkman, is a gifted leader who has a passion for Christ and helping others. I found that the workbook exercises, peer group support, and Christ-centered focus were a true blessing. There was a multitude of great exercises from the workbook that we completed. Two of these exercises that stood out for me were the ‘Calling canvas’ and ‘Targeting and staying in your sweet spot’.
I was recently offered an executive-level position with a big paycheck and fancy title; however, after daily prayer and working through the class exercises which helped refine my personal life’s purpose statement, I came to the realization that this particular corporate position (despite my ego at times wanting to take the money and run :)) was not in alignment with God’s calling for my life, and the only title that mattered to me was being a child of God and a follower of Christ. “
Peace of Mind
Mark 8:36 says: “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?”. As one of my mentors once told me, “You can’t put a price on peace of mind”, which I have found to be true. After making this decision and not looking back, I have found a peace of mind, body, and spirit that continues to reaffirm that I am walking in ‘True North’ alignment with God’s plan for my life (Philippines 4:7). This recent decision has also freed me up to continue to serve on nonprofit boards for at-risk women & children and ongoing mentorship for at-risk youth males; along with my passion as a Special Olympics volunteer. Today, I try and remind myself daily to continue to remain ‘moldable’ for the potter’s hands (Isaiah 64:8).
