You are Created for Good Works

Annually, the Crossroads Career Board of Directors gather together at a retreat to pray, fellowship, and strategically plan for the upcoming year. In 2019, we met in Minnesota to do precisely that…

Although the retreat agenda is pre-planned, there is always enough flexibility to make real-time modifications as necessary. As we were discussing our plans to expand our reach for ministry, we identified a gap in our outreach efforts that had previously not been addressed, and there were no plans to close the gap in the upcoming year.

We have churches and organizations throughout the United States and various parts of the world using our workbooks, conducting workshops, and ministering to others. We have a support email address people can use to get answers to their questions. Also, we have added chat capabilities to our website for more timely support, and we have even added a mobile app since our retreat. Yet, the gap remained unclosed.

You see, this gap we’re referring to is when there is no church, organization, or even a “study buddy” around to deliver our 7-step content to a person at a crossroads in their career. Other than the bible, the 7-step process is our primary ministry tool.

So, we had a discussion to determine what options were available to close the content delivery gap. Now, we’re a small, not for profit organization funded by donations and product sales. Thus, we don’t have the funding to hire someone to deliver the 7-step process content. Ministry partners and volunteers perform all of our content delivery.

After much discussion, we decided to use free webinars to deliver the content, closing the gap. We had started using webinars the previous year to deliver various career-related content, and they had been received very well.

Since volunteers would do the work, we decided if we completed one webinar per month for each step, we would be completed before the Fall of 2020. We didn’t want to be too aggressive with the schedule; however, we wanted the project completed.

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.”

Proverbs 16:3

In January of 2020, we had our volunteers lined up for the webinars, and in February, we delivered Step 1: Upward.  All went well with the first webinar, and in March, we delivered Step 2: Attitude. That’s when we got the call…

COVID-19 had become prevalent in our lives. People were becoming sick and dying, the economy was shutting down, and unemployment began to rise rapidly. But, back to the call…

The call was a challenge to the team to complete the webinars one per week, not once per month as initially planned. Well, this was a significant acceleration of the schedule. It would place a substantial drain on our resources since all of our team members were volunteers who already had full-time jobs.

After spending some time discussing resources, we were able to have some additional administrative allocations for the team, allowing us to produce webinars at a pace of one per week for the next five weeks.

“A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.”

Proverbs 16:9

During last year’s retreat, we had a plan and had committed it to the Lord. Intellectually we know the Lord directs our steps. What we didn’t realize at the time is that He would be re-directing our actions on this project. He knew about COVID-19; we didn’t. He knew there would be a greater need than we could imagine, we didn’t. He is the Alpha and the Omega; we aren’t.

We are pleased to announce the Created for Good Works webinar project is complete as of this week, praise God.

If you’re at a crossroads in your career or know someone who’s at one in theirs, use His provision, and walk through it with the Lord.

You are created for good works.

Walk in them.

  1. Thank you for sharing this story! It provides me with another example of what is going on beyond the “four walls” that I am limited to. But God is not in quarantine, he is not isolated, and this is evidence of that. It is also a great reminder for us to be people who remember, to reflect. We are called to not forget, but to remember: the goodness of God; his faithful ways in our own unique story; how he has brought us through the storms of life. During this storm, I am grateful for the many ways I see the Lord reminding me of this, as well as the fact that there ARE things I can do, even as there are so many things I can’t.
