1. Treasure hunting made easier

Imagine you are looking for hidden treasure in your job search, and all you have to do is ask for directions. Write a 10-second script of the position you seek: the job, employer and location you prefer. For example…“I am looking for a sales position with a medical products company in Atlanta. Who do you know in the healthcare business?” Simple, direct and quick!

2. You never know who can help

Begin with a list of everyone you know: family, friends, work associates, school buddies, neighbors, anyone and everyone. You never know who knows who. See or call each with a 6-part conversation: “How are you? May I ask your help? I am looking for…? Do you know anyone with…? May I use your name as a referral? Thank you!” Send a note of thanks with your resume.

3. Calling people you don’t know

Start with the name of the person who referred you…“John Smith suggested I call you.” Ask for a couple of minutes…“Is this a convenient time to talk?” Tell them why you are calling…“I am looking for.” Ask them for help…“Can you help me find?” Ask for referrals…”Do you know someone who?” Finish with..."Thank you. Is there anything I can do for you? May I use your name as a referral? May I send you a follow-up note?"

4. Search for employers you can help

Ask for personal referrals to employers who need most what you do best. Look for employers you can help versus thinking only about yourself and what you want. Successful motivation begins with right motives. "You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives..."

5. Looking is not the same as seeing

One eye is for looking – searching for the job you think you want. The other eye is for seeing – finding the work prepared for you. Sometimes it is what you are looking for – other times, it is not. As you are networking, be a good steward of whoever and whatever you are given, and don’t worry about what you are not given. “The mind of man plans his way. God directs his steps.”

6. Networking to give, not just get

People hunger and thirst for comfort and joy. When networking, make a positive and refreshing deposit in each conversation. Approach and finish every encounter with open hands, a gentle touch and a hearing heart. May it be said of you…“For I have come to have much joy and comfort in your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, brother.”

Start every day by asking God. He knows the plans He has for you. He knows where all the job openings are. He knows everyone who is hiring. “Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock it shall be opened to you.”
